Organizational methods and tone used in Douglas Todd’s â€Å"Beware the Boredom Boom† Douglas Todd’s essay â€Å"Beware the Boredom Boom† is a logically organized piece about the often minimized plague of boredom eating away at society. The topic he is approaching in this essay is one that could be easily dismissed by any serious reader, and so it must be treated carefully and written in such a way that creates interest without over or under dramatizing the problem. I am going to discuss Todd’s organizational methods and tone as they lend to the overall effectiveness of the essay. He used the device of storytelling to give a light-hearted, interest-sparking appeal to his essay, only to later disallow the topic to be treated in a flippant way at all. This further promotes the reader’s interest by catching him off-guard. Todd really needed to jolt the reader like this in order to force him to take seriously a topic that many understand as being frustrating but benign. Once he has the reader’s attention, Todd is able to start presenting his argument for boredom as a chronic syndrome having an increasingly negative effect on our society. He cites various studies and scientific figures as a means of building his case for the deeply-impacting negative effects of boredom, outlining what a truly serious and potentially devastating problem it really is. He also directly addresses the seeming paradox of boredom becoming such a prevalent plague in a society which is constantly bombarded with various forms of stimulation and ever-experience-enhancing advancing technology. â€Å"Plugged in at home and on the street to TV, the Internet, laptops, DVDs, cell phones and MP3s, many young people are becoming merely reactive† (pp. XXX). In fact, through his carefully presented research and thoroughly articulated arguments, Todd is able to effectively show the reader just how it is those very elements are what is causing, promoting, and perpetuating this increasingly threatening downward spiral of aimless boredom. Todd’s organizational method here was highly effective, because he is effectively able to grab the reader’s attention right from the beginning, and, once he had it, he is able to maintain that attention through his various examples of scientific research, personal testimonies, and direct quotes. This organizational method also succeeded in forcing the reader to take the subject matter seriously, which was Todd’s primary goal. He was also able to succeed in doing this with his writing style and tone. Todd’s tone throughout this piece is slightly humorous while also remaining very serious. His tone can seem light-hearted at times, and his personal voice is ever present in his word choice and sentence construction: â€Å"It was impossible to be bored in hard-scrabble primitive days because the fight for survival kept you forever on your toes† (pp. XXX). However, this light-hearted writing style is yet another device that Todd employs in order to keep his reader’s attention. It is through his witty remarks that the reader is able to more fully understand the points he is making. As in the example stated above, while it does seem like a sarcastic side comment, this is yet another idea that forces the reader to pause and really think about the argument Todd has presented: after a brief reflection, this â€Å"sarcastic† comment makes perfect sense, and seems to succinctly explain how exactly people got to be so terribly bored. Todd’s essay is very effective at treating the â€Å"problem† of boredom in a serious and engaging way. His writing style is clear, concise, and simple. His organization is very structured and creates an appropriate step-by-step approach to the idea of something as common as boredom actually being a social plight. Sculpture Three Angel Musicians Essay For this assignment, I decided to visit the Norton Simon Museum located in Pasadena, California, located only a few miles away from the legendary Rose Bowl stadium. The Norton Simon Museum has plenty of pre-renaissance paintings and figures. One figure/statue that stood out for me was titled Three Angel Musicians. The artist is not specifically stated in this piece but it comes from the Pisan School. This sculpture is made of white marble and stands about 20. 5 inches high for each figure. Each angel musician is seen holding a different instrument. The left angel is seen playing a zither. A zither is an ancient musical device that closely resembles a harp, but the person plucks the strings of the zither when it is positioned horizontally across the person’s body. The center angel is playing a bagpipe, although the features of the bagpipe make it difficult to identify what instrument this is. The right angel is playing on a set of timbrels, which look like miniature drums that are worn across the person’s waist. The Pisan School is named after the Italian city named Pisa, which is probably where this sculpture was made from. The sculpture was located in a room surrounded by various Italian tapestries. The figure is pretty small to see from far away so I took a closer look at the sculpture so I could see the different curves, lines and features of the angels that are present. The great thing about the Norton Simon Museum is that the staff allows patrons to take pictures of paintings or any type of artwork because many students comes to this museum for their art-related papers. The figures in this sculpture look like women, who are probably older in age, possibly around their fifties. They are wearing garments that resemble a toga from Greek culture. The garment goes all the way down toward the ground and it covers their feet so you cannot see them. The facial expression of the angels indicates that they are happy and they are passionate in playing purposeful music for a specific occasion. The marble sculptures have a blend of white and tan colors. The blend is woven throughout the sculpture creating a uniform color as a statue. After doing some research, I found out that the Pisan School is actually the artist of Three Angel Musicians. There is only a minimal amount of information from this artist, but after looking at some different art pieces, it seems that the Pisan School creates paintings and sculptures with a biblical theme. One example is titled Virgin and Child Enthroned with Four Saints. In this piece, the Pisan School shows a picture of a child, who appears to be that of the newborn Christ. Surrounding the child include the Virgin Mary along with 2 female saints and 2 male saints. Without knowing much about the Pisan School, I would hypothesize that the Three Angel Musicians has some type of religious component attached to this piece. After looking at the various features of the marble statue, I would expect these musicians to play at an important event within the Italian culture. For example, these musicians could play for the birth of a new child or the celebration of a certain â€Å"victory† for one of the Italian cities. The facial expressions of the musicians indicated that they are happy individuals that are excited to be in the environment they are in. I would assume that these musicians play an important role in society because the instruments they play are not typically found in everyday society. Bagpipes, a zither and timbrels are all instruments that refer back to ancient times. Possibly, by playing these instruments, the angels are playing an ode to ancient Gods that ruled over these Italian lands centuries ago. The idea of sameness was presented in Lois Lowry’s novel, The Giver, where Jonas the main character lived in a community that everyone was the same. On the other hand, Jonas became the Receiver of Memory and realized that sameness was not as perfect since they had to give up important things such as love and colours. In the novel, The Giver, the author Lois Lowry demonstrates that sameness could mistreat people rather than benefit them as shown through character, atmosphere and symbolism. Jonas, the protagonist of the novel, was a twelve-year-old boy who was special, intelligent and courageous as shown through character. To interpret, Jonas received the most important position in the community that was the Receiver of Memory. It was a rare position however Jonas was somewhat more special than others. Therefore, Ceremony of Twelve happened every December. It was the day when every individuals aged twelve had to attend to be assigned a job by the Elders. The Chief Elder, who was the leader of Jonas’ community mentioned that â€Å"Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory† (Lowry 60) and â€Å"He has shown all of the qualities that a Receiver must have† (Lowry 62). Jonas also can see Beyond, which in this case was colour. He received various memories from the Giver and figured out that sameness has taken away the colours from the community. Furthermore, Jonas showed his intelligence through knowing and understanding the ideas that th e Giver was trying to transfer to him quickly.
